How to change your own password

CuraNet recommends that you change your password every now and then and that you never give your password to another person.
(Of course, you have to be connected to CuraNet in order to change your password)

On most computers, simply clicking here opens the password-change-program.
When this program is open, proceed with step 2.
If this link doesn't do anything, please proceed with step 1:

Step 1.

For windows 95/98/ME/XP/2000 users:
Go to the Start button (bottom left of your screen) and then choose Run. At Open, you type: telnet tula.cura.net Press OK.
Go to step 2. For windows 3.x users:
Double-click on the Telnet icon in the Chameleon Sampler program group.
Go to Connect. At Host name, you type: telnet tula.cura.net Press OK.
Go to step 2.

Step 2.

2. The Telnet window opens, and asks you to log in (your Username) and then asks you for your password.
3. You will then see the following screen (colors may be different):

Change Passwords

4. As you can see, there are two different passwords which you can change.
Normally, the password you use to get connected to the internet is the same password that you use if you want to get your e-mail.

Now, you can choose to have a different password for each:

  • 1 Change System Password
  • 2 Create/Change Mail Password for APOP Clients The system password is used to log onto the internet and for receiving your e-mail.
However, if you have an APOP enabled e-mail program, you can create an alternate password for your mailbox: with the system password you can then log onto the internet and with the mail password you can receive your e-mail.

    These e-mail programs
    are NOT APOP enabled:

  • Netscape
  • Outlook
  • These e-mail programs
    are APOP enabled:

  • Eudora
  • Outlook for Macintosh
  • 5. Enter your selection, number 1 (Change System Password) or number 2 (Create/Change Mail Password for APOP Clients).
Again, please be sure that you have an APOP enabled e-mail program if you choose option 2!

    6. The system asks for your old password.

    7. The system then asks for your new password. You can type it and hit the Enter key on your keyboard.

Passwords must meet the following requirements:
    1) Each password must have at least six characters. Only the first eight characters are significant.
    2) Each password must contain at least two alphabetic characters and at least one numeric or special character. In this case, "alphabetic" means upper and lowercase letters.
    3) Each password must differ from the user name and from any reverse or circular shift of that name. For comparison, an uppercase letter and its corresponding lowercase letter are equivalent.
    4) New passwords must differ from the old by at least three characters. For comparison, an uppercase letter and its corresponding lowercase letter are equivalent.

    8. You have to Re-enter you new password (type it and press Enter).

    9. Finally, a dialog box appears, saying Connection to host lost:

    Connection to Host Lost

    10. Press OK, and you now have a new password.

    11. Please write your password down and keep it in a safe place for future reference.
