Daily operation of the Animal Shelter, currently employing eight full-time workers and one part-timer, is costly. Services rendered to the public, e.g., boarding facilities for dogs and cats and the transportation of unwanted animals to the Shelter, generate some income but not sufficient to cover basic expenses such as food, medication and sterilization, payroll, maintenance costs, pick-up trucks and the animal ambulance. The Board of the Society is therefore confronted annually with a financial deficit of around Nafl. 250,000.- (US $ 139,000.-) The Local Government contributes with a yearly subsidy of Nafl 41,590.- (US $ 23,100.-) and the remainder is financed by sponsors, donations and various fundraising activities. The contribution of sponsors and donors covers 70% of the deficit and is of vital importance for the continued existence of the Animal Shelter!

October 4th 2007: World Animals’ Day: Pet food collection and sterilization promotion…

Children, aged between 4 and 12 and from 126 local schools, brought pet food to school to donate to the shelter animals, which was then collected by volunteers and taken to the Shelter. The result was an enormous stock of cans and bags of pet food, enough to feed the shelter animals for approximately 8 months. The younger children received colouring sheets and teachers of the older children received  posters promoting sterilization of pet animals and information on this topic to share with their students.

Students of  ‘Vista del Mar’, a school for children with learning difficulties, have their cans of pet food ready whilst enjoying their teacher’s story about her rabbit.

Students of  Emmy Berthold College built a paper house and  filled it with cans and bags with pet food.

FINAL RESULT OF MONEY COLLECTION OCTOBER 2006

Throughout the entire month of October money was collected island-wide to support the Shelter. About Nafl. 17.000,- was the total at the final count of the money collected by students of the Dr. Albert Schweitzerschool and the Marnixschool. The youngsters, who dedicated their free time to raise funds out of their love for animals, held collection boxes at the entrance to supermarkets, the post office and other public places during the month of October. This amount also includes the proceeds of boxes that were placed in restaurants, banks and shops. Bas and Eva Bongers, who collected Nafl. 3.340, last year (Read more >>) received help this year from their younger brother Otto, and these three siblings together collected a total of Nafl. 3.773,42. Congratulations to this dedicated family!
Adult volunteers approached local businesses and offices and an amount of NAfl 38.000,- was donated, which creates a current total of around Nafl 55.000,-
