Support urgently needed for sterilization program!!!

Help us solve the tragic problem of wildly excessive numbers of both stray and pet animals on our island. Please support our fight against neglect and cruelty!

Many readers in the Netherlands and in other countries will have visited our “Dushi Kòrsou” and been saddened by the sight of so many neglected animals. You CAN make a difference …. Please help! With your donation you will immediately improve, through sterilization, the life of a neglected or abused animal, and you will also make a long-term contribution to the overall community of Curacao. However, a donation of any amount, large or small, would be received with equal gratitude. A donation of any amount, however small or large, will always be received with gratitude.

Update October 24th 2006:
Several reactions to our plea for help in financing the sterilization program have been received from the Netherlands and Belgium. At the last count a total of € 9.109,45 (Nafls.19.687,- ) had been deposited with the Postbank in The Netherlands. Most of these donated sums were once-only donations, but some supporters have offered to become permanent donors, supporting the Society with a yearly donation, which will prove to be of invaluable help.

Sterilization Project promoted in Dutch TV series.
The well known Dutch TV producer Endemol, in cooperation with the Curaçao Tourist Board, created a 10 episode TV series entitled: ” Erik zoekt een huis” (Erik is looking for a Home). In this TV production Erik van de Hof positively promotes the island of Curaçao whilst looking for a home and visiting many places on the island. In one of the episodes Erik visits the shelter where Nathalja, one of the organizers of the Sterilization Project explains the project and makes an appeal to viewers for donations. As a result of this episode being screened, much response was received by E-mail from people wishing to help. In the picture: Nathalja wearing a T-shirt with her appeal.

OPSC actions continue in Brievengat
After the extremely successful sterilization weekend at Groot Kwartier, where 123 animals were helped, activity has continued in the neighborhood of Tra’i Seru where 42 animals were sterilized free of charge. From March 2006, activity has been focused on Brievengat. Endeavours include education on appropriate daily care of animals; sterilization of two animals per family with only a small contribution towards cost, confinement of stray dogs and firm action against neglect and cruelty. From March till June in total 88 animals were sterilized. Actions will continue in this neighborhood for the next three months.

Project OPSC (Operation Pet and Stray Control)
In February 2003 the Curaçao Society for the Protection of Animals (Stichting Dierenbescherming Curaçao) began to deal with the enormous overpopulation of stray and domestic animals (mostly dogs) on our island. Endeavours include the catching of stray dogs, collection of sick and unwanted animals, firm action against neglect and cruelty, education on appropriate daily care of animals and free sterilization of two animals per family.

This project was financially supported by several official bodies in the Netherlands, local fundraising and donations.

After two years of action in neighborhoods in and around town, figures prove that the project
has had an enormous impact on our community. Euthanization figures fell dramatically and sterilization figures increased rapidly.

To continue the project in other neighborhoods and to maintain an important momentum, more funds are urgently required. Stichting “Doen” of the Postal Code Lottery in the Netherlands, who have already supported the first part of the project with € 25.000 have kindly granted a further subsidy of € 12.000. This subsidy is intended for a specific part of the project, namely the catching of stray dogs, collection of sick or unwanted animals and any necessary euthanizations. In order to execute the complete project we are in desperate need of funds for a further important part – sterilization of as many animals as possible!

Update:
An official request for financial aid was sent to the Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals (Nederlandse Vereniging tot Bescherming van Dieren) and this organization supported the OPSC project with € 10,000.-- This most generous contribution is of vital importance to us and enables us to continue with the project which we had sadly had to put on hold in recent months, as finances for sterilization had run out! Thank you so much Dierenbescherming Nederland!

"PRAYER OF A STRAY"

Dear God please send me somebody who'll care!
I'm tired of running, I'm sick with despair.
My body is aching; it's so racked with pain.
And Dear God I pray as I run in the rain,

That someone will love me and give me a home.
A warm cozy bed I can call my own
My last owner neglected me and chased me away
To rummage in garbage and live as a stray.

But now God I'm tired and hungry and cold.
And I'm afraid that I'll never grow old.
They've chased me with sticks and hit me with stones
While I run in the streets just looking for bones!

I'm not really bad God, please help if you can.
For I have become just a "VICTIM OF MAN!"
I'm wormy Dear God and I'm ridden with fleas
and all that I want is an owner to please!

If you find one for me God, I'll try to be good
I won't run away and I'll do as I should.
I don't think I'll make it to long on my own,
Cause I'm getting so weak and I'm so all alone.

Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry,
Cause I'm so afraid God, that I'm gonna die!
And I've got so much love and devotion to give,
That I should be given a new chance to live.

So Dear God PLEASE, PLEASE answer my prayer
And send me somebody who WILL really care...
